The collection consists of Todd's manuscript preface to his book, The Lost Traveller, 4 March 1967, with the heading, An Attempt at a Preface. The book was reprinted by Dover in 1968, and, at Dover's request, he recounts in the preface how he came to write the book, what his influences were, with some mention of the book's meaning.

Ruthven Todd was born in Edinburgh, and educated at Fettes College and the Edinburgh School of Art. After graduating he held a few odd jobs, while concentrating on painting, and was associated with the Surrealist movement.. He later worked as a copywriter and journalist, and made a name for himself as a poet, novelist, and short-story writer.
